An Interview with Mother Teresa

Well, one day in June, 1984, we received a telephone call from a dear friend, Monsignor William Curlin. He had great news for us, he said. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was going to open a new hospice in the Washington area for men and women with AIDS.

Now the condition called AIDS was rather a new (and I’ll have to say scary) disease or medical condition. People who contracted this disease almost always wasted away and died not long after they became ill with AIDS. There was very little treatment and no cure.

It was good news that Mother and her Missionaries of Charity were going to take on this challenge. They had great courage to try to give these poor people some dignity as they were dying. Mostly, AIDS carriers were like the lepers of Jesus’ time; no one wanted to be around them. Any one who entered their rooms in hospitals had to wear masks and gloves and even sometimes a body covering.

But there was more good news, Monsignor said. He wanted your Granddad and me to go down to the Missionaries of Charity Motherhouse near St. Teresa of Avila parish and meet Mother, herself. Although we had met Mother Teresa before (I sat with her at a Tea at Catholic University –she was very friendly and funny), this was to be a working meeting. Monsignor said he would like me to interview her about the new sanctuary and her work with AIDS. The interview would be taped and shown to area seminarians at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.

This was exciting. If Mother Teresa was going to provide a shelter for these patients, there must be hope for them. Forget scary. She was going to bring the face of Jesus to them, I firmly believed. My job was to ask questions that would allow her to tell the seminarians that they, too, must wear the face of Jesus in working with AIDS victims.

The day of our meeting came. We met Monsignor and his cameraman outside the parish church. We all went to the door of the convent and a small Sister ushered us into a very plain room. I don’t remember much about the look of it; there seemed to be a lot of wood; the furnishings were not luxurious. Simple. Plain. The camera and lights were set up. I had written a list of questions and read them to Monsignor. He thought they were fine.

Then Mother Teresa came into the room … quietly. She was wearing her white habit banded in blue and her feet were bare in her sandals. She greeted us all, walked to a chair and sat down. Her face was very solemn but peaceful. I began to ask the questions. She answered them all, talking about why the Order was founded … to serve the poorest of the poor; She explained that the people with AIDS were the poorest of the poor in our culture here.

The interview lasted about half an hour. All the questions were answered in a soft voice, a voice of love, with reasons based on the Gospel.

I had one last question…….

Earlier in the week, when I told a friend that I was going to interview Mother Teresa about her work with AIDS, the friend said she didn’t see how Mother could work with those people. She said they earned their pain because they were all sinners and didn’t deserve any care that the Sisters would bring.

I mentioned what my friend had said to Mother and then I asked her, “How would you reply to persons who think that way?” Mother drew her small self up until she seemed to fill the room, and shouted out at the top of her voice, “WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE?” She continued, “All of us are sinners! All of us depend on the love and mercy of God to make our lives livable! If God treated us the way we ought to be treated because of our sins, we would all be in agony! I have no patience with those people. Mercy, forgiveness, and love. That’s what we are given by God and what we all need to offer.” There was fire in her voice, and strength to mow down every obstacle. Now I may not have quoted her exact words, but they are pretty close.

That was the end of the interview. Mother smiled, thanked Monsignor, the cameraman and me for allowing her to speak. She thanked your Granddad for coming. We posed for a few pictures.

I never saw the video, but Monsignor Curlin said it was very good.

It was certainly a memorable day for me.

Last night in Maui- pina coladas and sunset.

We took a 3-4 hour drive around West Maui- lots of single lane roads and one way bridges. The ride is very much worth the effort; below is one of the many beautiful views on this trip.

Thursday we went to a luau in Lahaina- a historic area with lots of cute shops and galleries.
Yesterday (Friday)we decided to go back there to shop and walk around and we purchased a small turtle sculpture because also yesterday while we were in the ocean, a huge sea turtle swam by us. Quite adorable! (Matt wanted to swim alongside it, but this turtle made it clear that he was going solo.)
Back to the luau- it was interesting- we sat with a man named Butch and his wife who happened to have been born on the island. Funny to sit and have dinner with people who say, "Oh, D.C.- that's the capital, right?"
(They also seem to laugh at anyone who chooses to work a lot.)
Today we snorkeled. This was a first for me. Right outside of our condo is some of the best snorkeling on Maui.
Everything was going swimmingly. Matt and I were floating next to some reefs and spotting all kinds of colorful fish and eel shaped fish etc. Then...
(Enter Jaws theme...)
Matt taps me and points.
Below us is swimming a shark.
Okay not very big. ...maybe 3 or 4 feet long...but a shark just the same.
I said.."Okay, my snorkeling days are over. See ya later Shark-a-gator."
We started swimming back in, but then I said I could stay. We stayed and snorkeled for another 30 minutes or so; fun activity.
Yeesh.
Why couldn't I have seen the shark on MY LAST time snorkeling?

Tomorrow we take a helicopter ride over West Maui and the island of Molokai.

I am fairly certain I will throw up.

A Heartfelt Thank You from Bill Graham

To all those who were so generous and caring with prayers and warm wishes beginning in January,

I had multiple ailments simultaneously- beginning with hydrocephalus, a weird sensation of lack of balance. I felt I was doing a poor imitation of Ray Bolger’s straw man. Then a mean attack of gout accompanied by an attack of cellulitis, and then and thereabouts that time came an infectious condition know as c-diff (clostridium difficile).
Because of the c-diff, we postponed the shunt operation which was deemed important for balance and overall control.

The onslaught of these ailments and the complications of treatment made it impossible to say with any confidence how long it would be before we were to declare “free at last.”

Now the shunt operation has been successfully completed and we’re on the way up and out. We should know on or before May 12 when we will be finished with this journey.

The Olney Theater Center, The National Players, the CUA drama department alumni, the Serra Club, friends at large, and family have expressed a wonder of good wishes. I am deeply grateful to all of you who were a part of this four month saga.

It has been a very trying time, but one in which I have been deeply moved by the genuine care and concern that have been expressed by so many of you. I thank God for the healing and for all of you…
who have lifted me up.

Granddad Alexander

I talked to grandmom about her father a couple days ago and wrote a bunch of the info down... there's much more as well that I'm hoping to get down.

Grandfather Alexander was a one-of-a-kind man from the very start.
At the ripe ol' age of 12 he built a car.

Yes. A car.

Vroom, vroom.

A car.
That takes major skills I know that much. I mean, 12 years old is like in 6th or 7th grade nowadays. Can you think of a 12 year old in your neighborhood that could construct a moving vehicle?
I can't.

In 8th grade he stopped school because he needed to help his family and start working. He did many things including an internship at a local shop.

When he was older he worked at a Used Car Dealership where he met his future wife.

Everybody say awwww...

After that the Depression came and he lost his job so he moved to Pennsylvania to live with relatives and got a job fixing presses at a publishing company.
These things were huge and very hard to fix I'd think.

Grandfather Alexander also loved to write poetry. He'd write about anything.

Cockroaches,

Workers,

the presses.

Anything. He'd write and enjoy it.

Later in life he relaxed and slowed things down a bit. My grandmother and grandfather decided that they would like to buy him a cat.
And so they did...

He and his wife seemed to like the cat so much they got another,
which bred another...
which bred another...

At one point in time they had 100 cats, not including the kittens.

After a while they got rid of most of their cats and kept two.

Now, my great-grandfather had one cat that he loved the most. They were buds. They stuck by each other. This cat was his favorite.

The day my great-grandfather went to be with the Lord, his favorite cat passed away as well.

This is NOT a picture of Grandfather Alexander, but of his father and his lovely wife :)

Aunt Lala remembers that...

"Grandad loved music and loved to sing.
He sang "Laura" to me.
He sang "Laura" all the time to me and he got a big kick out of himself.
He let us help him feed the cats but he had rules...
stand back when the food was grinding in the grinder and don't bother Simon Peter (the mean cat).
He wore sleeveless t-shirts around the house and when I picture him, he is NEVER sitting..
He is tinkering or fixing, or gardening, or polishing.
He had stamp collections, coin collections and antiques.
He was a "everything" man."

Do any of my Aunts or Uncles remember anything in particular about him? Traits, funny quotes, anything really. It would be much appreciated :)

Anyone who knew the Clan of Graham in the late 70's and early 80's would have also known our good family friend, Alice. Originally Carole's friend from Catholic University, she quickly become another family member, attending our family gatherings and adding spark and fun to the Tracy Drive household. These days we miss not having Alice as a part of our lives but it still feels as though she were a close relative though she lives far away(California).

Scotland/August: The Month of the Haggis

Carole is in Edinburgh, Scotland this month- the same month last year when Beezer, Carole, Matt and Laura were in Scotland in 2007.
Remember that? Beezer tried to scare Laura in a graveyard; Matt had to be part of an embarrassing street show act; Carole tried haggis!!!
Well, we were feeling nostalgic for those times of yesteryear...so we did the only natural thing.
We went to the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton, Maryland- to talk like Scots and eat haggis. (Nobody really ate haggis though. Next time- it's a requirement.)

I tell you this; the food in this Scottish pub was better than any nosh we sampled in Scotland.
Quite tasty. (Mom makes a better Welsh Rarebit though.)

Clan tartans draped the walls. No Clan of Graham exact tartan match- but a few looked mighty close.

Cheers to our Scottish heritage.

We decided that we will be making an annual Royal Mile Haggis Outing every August.

Last weekend, we visited our favorite Bostonians: The Flahertys.

We were overjoyed to meet the newest Flaherty, Erin Louise.

We spent the afternoon by the water.

Friday night we ventured to Fenway Park for a Red Sox vs. Yankees game.

Our Freedom Trail adventure culminated in a lovely meal next to a window revealing all the goings on of the open-air farmers market next door.

Saturday evening we sat on their rooftop and listened to a concert performed in the park below.
